“The Gloucestershire Engravings” by Johannes Kip

As featured in Cotswold Life summer issue 2021, page 192. A Dutchman’s historical record of Gloucestershire.

Local historian Anthea Jones, author of “The History of Tewkesbury”, as well as books on the Cotswolds and Cheltenham has edited a new book on the Gloucestershire Engravings of Johannes Kip.

Three hundred years ago, in 1721, the Dutch engraver Johannes Kip died, ending a successful 30 year English career as a print-maker leaving a legacy covering Gloucestershire. Anthea’s book contains high quality reproductions of all 64 engravings. Accompanying these is a brief commentary on each with pointers to the details and to the history of the houses and families, including many colour and black and white illustrations.

Kip’s engravings in many cases reflect the gardens and houses as they still exist 300 years later, and as such offer an additional contribution to the history of Gloucestershire.

The book is published in hardback by Hobnob Press in association with the Gloucestershire Gardens and Landscape Trust and is available from alison’s bookshop in Tewkesbury High Street at £ 20.00. Copies of the author’s “History of Tewkesbury” are also available.
